Community Projects

Portobello Writer Development Programme – starting Saturday 23 April 2.30 pm – 4.00 pm

**THIS COURSE IS NOW FULLY BOOKED**

We are really excited about bringing a new Writer Development Programme to Portobello Library in Edinburgh!

We are particularly keen to support writers from underrepresented communities who may face barriers in developing their writing. Priority will be given to writers from BAME, LGBTQ+, and low-income backgrounds, and those with caring responsibilities, disabilities, or chronic illnesses.

This programme is designed to support writers who write regularly. Over the course of seven months, it will help you focus, develop, and grow confidence in your craft among a small, friendly group of fellow writers.

We will meet on the fourth Saturday of each month, from 2.30 pm to 4.00 pm, and simultaneously via Zoom with participants joining us from home. It will be held in the upstairs room (with lift access), which will be ventilated and socially distanced. These sessions will include:

  • Tutored group sessions
  • Individual mentoring
  • A writers’ showcase finale
  • Hybrid access (via Zoom and in the library) with closed captions
  • An ongoing, supportive Facebook group

Each tutored session will provide a kick-off writing exercise, a session theme to focus on, writing time, and group workshopping time: the chance to share or discuss your work with your peers.

Plus, the private Facebook group is there for us to share work-in-progress, tips, opportunities, and writerly chat between sessions for support and inspiration!

As we want this programme to be as accessible as possible, please let us know if you have any particular requirements to be able to get the most out of our sessions. For health reasons, I will be wearing a face mask, and the session may be recorded for writers joining us via Zoom.

** Advance booking is required to join this programme**

When you are ready to book the programme, please state whether you would like to be offered a priority place, or to be included on the waiting list (if you don’t self-identify as an underrepresented writer). Waiting list places will be treated as first come first served and I will be in touch to update you week commencing 11 April.

To book a place, ask any questions, or let us know of any requirements, please email: hello@jlhallwriter.com

This programme is part-funded by Scottish Book Trust’s Live Literature Fund.
